CEL Green Retrofitting to achieve Net Zero Energy Campus

Client: CEL

Central Electronics Limited is a Public Sector Enterprise under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India. It was established in 1974 with an objective to commercially exploit indigenous technologies developed by National Laboratories and R&D Institutions in the country. With a mission to be a significant player in the field of Solar Photovoltaic Energy particularly for rural applications as also in Railway Safety and Signaling Electronics, Microwave Phase Control Modules and also to diversify into areas like Security Systems, Nuclear Instrumentation and Metro Electronic System; CEL is pioneer in the country in the field of Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) and it has developed the technology with its own R&D efforts.

Sharp Developments ongoing “Design Consultancy Service for Green Retrofitting to make entire Campus as Net Zero Energy Campus” for Central Electronics Limited (CEL)
A Green Campus is a place where environmental friendly practices combine to promote sustainable and eco-friendly practices in the campus. The green campus concept offers an institution the opportunity to take the lead in redefining its environmental culture and developing new paradigms by creating sustainable solutions to environmental, social and economic needs of the mankind.
A building doesn’t have to be new to be efficient. Today’s leading building owners are retrofitting buildings, converting existing buildings into models of sustainability. Greening the campus is all about sweeping away wasteful inefficiencies and using conventional sources of energies for its daily power needs, correct disposal handling, purchase of environment friendly supplies and effective recycling program. Institute has to work out the time bound strategies to implement green campus initiatives. These strategies need to be incorporated into the institutional planning and budgeting processes with the aim of developing a clean and green campus.
The current project in view is proposed to achieve a Platinum rating for the existing campus of Central Electronics Limited (CEL), from Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) as per its existing building rating system.
The project includes green retrofitting consultancy for existing administration building & remaining campus building(s) to achieve net zero status at institutional level; and design of solar park with demonstrable Green technologies.

Roles and Responsibilities

The ongoing project includes various components to refurbish an existing campus to a Sustainable environment including

Green Building Design    |    Energy Audit    |    Water Audit

Energy audit
A comprehensive list of details essential for Green Building Certification has been discussed with the client team and documented. According to the list, information sought from the client has been compiled in the formats required by the rating agency. Detailed energy and water audits for the building (demarcated boundary for rating) have been conducted, to compile information about the current scenario of energy and water supply and consumption patterns.
The Green Retrofit Consultancy has been proceeding, following rigorous consultations with the client to render the required services. An initial green retrofit feasibility study to evaluate broadly the likely credit points that can be achieved under the desired Green building rating system for existing buildings, set the base. The entire process of simulation and energy analysis as well as water efficiency calculations is an essential component; and the final report shall include a description of the project, a record of all modeling assumptions (set-points, material specifications, schedules, equipment and lighting densities, etc.), a description of ECMs, specifications, simulation results, recommendations and the credits achieved.
