Majority of the villages in India have a common problem of Dark Roads and Alleys. The Ladies cannot venture out after Dark. The problem is common for places where there is an Electricity connection and where there is no connection. The street light if Installed do not work due to frequent power cuts and other maintenance issues, like fused Bulbs, etc.

The problem is more compounded at the approach roads to the village and near to the farms. This causes great difficulty for the farmers return back after working in the fields.

The ongoing Bhadohi LED Street Lighting Project of ONGC aims to reduce the dependency on fossil based electricity consumption and provide safe, reliable and clean source of lighting with multiple benefits to the target community. Under this project, Solar Street Lights shall be placed at strategic locations in the targeted 10 villages with approximately 190 direct beneficiaries in the Bhadohi Lok Sabha constituency (Suriyawan and Bhadohi blocks) in Uttar Pradesh. Apart from these direct beneficiaries, this project shall also have a wider impact on approximately 3800 people living in the surrounding areas.

LED streetlight with Solar power reduces the maintenance and operation cost and also since it has a Dusk to Dawn controller the lights gets ON as the Sun Sets and Goes OFF as the Sun Rises. LED itself has a life of more than 30,000 working hours (Conservative figures).

The model of LED street lights used has LUX levels as prescribed by MNRE. In fact the Panel and the battery size have been optimised for better charging.
